(24 April May 2008) A £19m contract to manufacture and supply the power cables that will connect the proposed Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm to the UK mainland has been awarded to Nexans, a worldwide leader in the cabling industry.
The contract scope includes engineering, procurement and construction of two 22km, 145kV submarine cables and a spare cable with associated equipment, as well as an optical fibre cable. Annually, the two submarine cables will export around 1.1 TWh of power to the mainland.
The full execution of the cable contract is subject to the wind farm receiving offshore consent from the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) and a final investment decision to be taken later in the year.
The power cables will be manufactured at Nexans’ factory in Halden, Norway for delivery in mid-April 2010.
Completion and production start-up of the offshore wind farm is planned for late 2011.
